New Rights views on education ( topic 1 ) Flashcards
What views are similar to New Rights and how ?
Functionalists , as they both believe that the education system is about instilling social solidarity and secondary socialisation.
What do the New Right believe the education state does ?
it fails to prepare children for the world and for the workplace as the policies that were created to promote mixed ability (involving students with mixed abilities so that everybody has a fair chance at education) have not been created.
What does education need to do according to the New Right ?
It needs to become more competitive within and between schools. They believe that there should be more about winning and losing instead of collaboration and fairness.
What do the New Right believe in the types of values that the education system should encourage ?
Shared values.
What do the New Right believe the education needs to be sorted into to make it more equal / fair ?
A parentocracy , which then allows for the value consensus to be set by parents and align to their beliefs and values rather than politicians who are often far from the mainstream.
What is a problem with excessive competition within / between schools ?
It means that the losers are children and d despite these teaching them important life lessons , it is also a problem as it can cause children to have a lack of motivation and low self esteem of themselves that they aren’t succeeding like others.
What do the New Right believe about rewards ?
they believe that everybody should push and work hard to get the rewards and that the spur of failure is important.
What is the spur of failure ?
The idea that everybody wants to win / succeed but that most will lose.
