new right view of the role of education Flashcards
why do the new right disagree with the functionalist education system?
they say it takes a one size fits all approach, which priorities unity instead of individual needs
whats the new rights ‘solution’ to the problems they see in the education system?
the marketisation of education
what do Chubb and Moe mean by their consumer choice theory?
they believe that state run education has failed for a number of reasons:
- unequal oppourtunities
- fails to produce pupils with the skills needed by the economy
- private schools are answering to paying customers which makes them more efficient
they argue that schools need to listen to the parents way more and that, by listening to the consumers, they will run better and it would be more of a personalised education
what do Chubb and Moe propose to support their consumer choice theory?
that all parents be given a voucher to spend on buying education for their children which would force schools to become more responsive to parents
what are the 2 roles that the new right suggest the state keeps?
1) they should impose a framework in which schools must run, using league tables, ofstead reports, etc to inform parents
2) the state should esnure that students are taught a shared culture, using the national curriculum. (similar to durkheims social solidarity)
2 cristisms of the new right:
- Ball thinks that competiton between schools benifits the middle class who can use their economic and cultural capital to get access to better schools
- the new right contradict themselves. Wanting a national curriculum but also wanting parental choice
