new right view Flashcards

Q

the new right view on education

A

education should keep society together by teaching shared views
(similar to functionalism)
education to ensure that the most able get into the most important jibs
schools should meet the needs of the customers (parentocracy)
CHUBB AND MOE: schools run by the local authorities (the state) do not reflect the needs of the countries or parents wishes.

Q

how can we criticize the functionalist view on education

A

the education system doesn’t teach specialist skills adequately as Durkheim claims. (e.g. wolf review on vocational education claims that high quality apprenticeships are rare and up to a third of 16-19 year olds are on courses that do not lead to a high education and good jobs.

equal opportunity in education doesn’t exist.
achievement is greatly influenced by class background rather than ability.

Melvin Tumin criticizes Davis and Moore for putting forward a circular argument: how to we know that a job is important? but answer is because it is highly paid.

Marxists argue that education in a capitalist society only transmits the ideology of a minority (the ruling class)

the interactionist Denis Wrong argues that functionalists have an ‘over-socialized view’ of people as mere puppets of society

neoliberals and the new right view argues that the state education system fails ti prepare young people adequately for work

Q

Marketization

A

schools are run on business principles and compete with each other (marketization)

competition helps improve education and delivers better value for money for the tax payer. education should be akin to supermarkets looking for more customers and competing.

failing schools should be shut down (standards) a business wouldn’t survive why should a school? teachers need to drive up standards t avoid schools failing.

education should build students to socialization and social coherence.

Q

chubb and moe
what they did, what they found and their conclusion

A

WHAT THEY DID
they argued that state run education in the US has failed because is didn’t create equal opportunities and failed the needs of the disadvantaged groups.
and is also fails to produce pupils with the skills needed by the economy. private schools produce higher quality education because they are answerable to paying consumers (the parents).

WHAT THEY FOUND
complaisant of 60,000 pupils from low income families in 1,015 state and private schools. shows low income pupils consistently do about 5% better in private schools than state schools.

THEIR CONCLUSION
introduced a market system in state education that gives control to the consumers. A voucher system to spend on buying education from a school of their choice.
