Size and actions of the federal government should be limited. ➡️ after the Vietnam war America entered a recession. There was energy shortage, high inflation, and high unemployment.
Federal supports for civil rights
Too much affirmative reaction (for African Americans) ➡️ many started to view America is going too far.

Traditional American values ➡️ abortion was made legal in the early stages of pregnancy.

Traditional American values ➡️ there was an outrage in the development of the gay rights movement amongst Christian Americans.

Republican nominee in 1964 against LBJ, lost the election (he had 39% of the votes)
Stronger national defence ➡️ he wanted to use nuclear weapons in the vietnam war, seen as an extremist in Vietnam policies.
