- argues that welfare policies have undermined the nuclear family and given family ‘perverse incentives’ - for ppl to start single parent families
-welfare state led to underclass become reliant on benefits + not motivated to find a job - a new underclass generation has emerged- idle, lazy, individuals who are happy to live of the welfare state ie universal credit

how are the children of the underclass affected
A
- follow the footsteps of their parents and will not seek a job and will remain content living a life of benefits
- teenage girls will see getting pregnant as an easy way to live+ avoid work wont seek a stable relationship due to not needing a breadwinner
- boys are likley lack a father figure + discipline from mum - not socialised fully - turn to anti-school subcultures
