New Right Flashcards
what does the new right favour
Marketisation of education
what similarities do they hold with functionalists
They both believe that some people are naturally more talented than others
They both favour an education system run on meritocratic principles of open competition and one that serves the needs of the economy by preparing young people for work
They both believe that education should socialise pupils into shared values such as competition and instil a sense of national identity
key difference between the new right and functionalists
The new right does not believe that the current education system is achieving these goals because it is run by the state
what approach does the new right believe the state education takes
The New Right argue that state education takes a one size fits all approach, imposing uniformity and disregarding local needs of local customers who use the schools - pupils and parents have no say
what does the one size fits all approach mean for the education system
It means that the education system is unresponsive and inefficient. Schools that are unanswerable to their customers waste their money or get poor results which means lower standards of achievement, a less qualified workforce and a less prosperous economy
where does the value of education lie
It lies in how well it enables a country to compete in the global economy.
what should the education system only give students
For the new right, the education system should only give students skills for a job
new right solution
The new rights solution to the problem is if schools are run more like business which empowers the consumers - this is known as marketisation of education
what is marketisation of education
Schools should compete with each other for students and funding to drive standards and the government should reduce their involvement in the education system

Chubb and More
what did Chubb and Moe study
consumer choice
chubb and moe’s study
In the 1990s Chubb and Moe carried out a study on state-run education in America, they found that it failed because it had not created equal opportunities and had failed the needs of disadvantaged pupils, it was inefficient because it failed to produce pupils with the skills needed by the economy while private schools delivered higher quality education because unlike state schools they are answerable to paying customers - parents
what did Chubb and Moe compare and what did they find out
Chubb and Moe compared the achievements of 60,000 pupils from low-income families in 1015 state and private high schools. Their evidence found that pupils from low-income families consistently do about 5% better in private schools than in state schools.
based on their findings, what do Chubb and Moe call for
Based on their findings, Chubb and Moe call for the introduction of a market system in state education that would put control in the hands of consumers, this would allow consumers to shape schools to meet their own needs and would improve quality and efficiency
Role of the state in the new right view
The state should impose a framework on schools within which they have to compete eg by publishing Ofsted reports and league tables.
The state ensures that schools transmit a shared culture by imposing a single national curriculum, it seeks to guarantee that schools socialise pupils into a single cultural heritage
