The executive (president), the judicial (the senate and the House of Representatives) and the legislative (the Supreme Court)
What does the idea of the ‘separation of powers’ do?
Ensures no branch is more powerful than the others

These are instructions which have the force of law but do not require congressional approval

He has the power to put forward a legislative programme and suggest ways to find this

When are appointments made to the Supreme Court?
When a current judge dies or retires, some presidents may never get to appoint someone during the term in the office
The president can also negotiate treaties but who must agree and who must allocate funds?
The senate must agree and congress must allocate funds
An example of negotiating treaties is, the Supreme Court may judge that the president has stepped out of his constitutional powers and the president must negotiate this, what is an example of this with bush and what did bush do to give him authority?
Bush attempted to have Guantanamo detainees tied by a military commission. This was ruled outside the powers of the president by the Supreme Court so bush introduced the military commission act 2006 to give him authority
