aphorism
a brief, pointed statement expressing some wise or clever observation about life
end-stopped line
line of verse with a pause at the end, often signaled by a comma of period
metonomy
a figure of speech in which something is very closely associated with a thing used to stand for or suggested the thing itself. (Ex. The PEN is mightier than the SWORD.)
naturalism
extreme form of realism, focusing on the sordid side of life
realism
attempt in literature and art to represent life as it really is, without sentimentalizing it or idealizing it.
run-on-line
line of poetry that has no pause at the end but “runs on” naturally to the next line.
synecdoche
figure of speech that utilizes a part as representative of the whole or vise versa (Ex. HEAD for cattle or LAW for policemen)
