new notes Flashcards
What is radioactive dating?
Radioactive dating is a method of dating rocks and minerals using radioactive isotopes
what is the law of superposition
In any undisturbed sequence of strata, the oldest layer is at the bottom and the youngest is at the top
What is the cross-cutting law
Any feature that cuts across a body of sediment or is younger than the rock it cuts across
what is the law of inclusions?
One rock body contains fragments of another rock body it must be younger than the fragments of rock
what are the main processes of sedimentary rocks
Weathering and erosion and deposition
what is the difference between rocks and minerals ?
A mineral is made up of a substance that under normal circumstances would form crystals. Rocks are made up of minerals.
difference of mafic and felsic minerals
Mafic: Iron and magnesium dark coloured
Felsic: Oxygen, aluminium, slicon, potassium and sodium light coloured
how is soiled formed
weathering of rock plants can physically and chemically weather rock
factors that affect the soil formation
Parent material
Climate
Life
Topography
Time
