It uses computers, allowing information to be delivered across platforms (Boyle.) Eg algorithms, digital footprint, cookies.
Characteristic of new media: interactivity.
The audience can create their own media- using social media or voting on TV shows. Media companies rely on audience participation (Jenkins.) Eg social media, news blogs, TV- Love Island.
Characteristic of new media: collective intelligence.
New media audiences create a buzz around it. Everyone can pool all their knowledge together, challenging the media owners’ power. Eg TV show communities on. social media.
Characteristic of new media: virtuality.
The audience can fully immerse themselves in the media, creating online identities. Eg VR+ Meta, social media, AI.
How new media has impacted traditional media.
-Changes in the news flow cycle. Citizen journalism has increased, speeding up the spread of news and how far it can spread (from local to global.) Traditional media has lost its influence- they need to put out stories constantly- churnalism.
-Heightened accountability: they are more receptive to criticisms of their reporting- social media, blogs. They are increasingly transparent online.
-Evolving news values. They compete with other companies for an audience. There is more live coverage and up to date reporting on global stories. They include Youtube videos and citizen reports.
Traditional medias’ profit.
It is reduced by new media- they struggle to make profit because everyone can quickly access new media on phones. This increases the influence and profit of Apple, Google, Facebook.
