What is media?
A medium of communication which is designed to enable a person or group to communicate info and ideas to an audience
What is mass media?
Media that can reach a large number of people
What is old media?
Traditional forms such as newspapers and radio that reach a more limited audience
What is new media?
Media formats that use modern technologies, spread content using screen based digital tech
Eg. Internet or phones
What was media like 10 years ago compared to now?
10yrs- people received tv pictures through aerials and analogue signal TV sets
Now- people buy TVs abs subscribe to cable tv with hundreds of channels or subscribe to streaming services
What is digitalisation?
The growth of digital tech in 1990s resulted in changes in way info is stored and transmitted- all info regardless of format is now converted into binary code
What is technological convergence?
Digitalisation resulted in convergence of different types of info into a single delivery system eg. Smart tv laptop phone etc
What is economic convergence?
Companies now work together to produce systems of communication
What is cultural convergence? (Jenkins)
Jenkins notes that CC has occurred as new media has changed the way members of society interact with both media and each other
Ofcom- Facebook remains default social network for 96% of UK adults
What is interactivity?
Users are responsive in real time by clicking on links and selecting menu items with a mouse
You select stories you want to read or watch
What is choice?
Changes have expanded choices available to us
Eg. Sky has over 600 channels
What does Boyle (2005) say about choice?
Societies use if tv has now evolved from a system of supply led tv to a demand led
What is participatory culture?
Media producers and consumers no longer occupy separate roles, they are now participants who interact with each other through social media and email
What is collective intelligence?
A vast amount of info is at our fingertips, media allows us to share knowledge, resources and skills
What did Boyle (2007) say about the generation divide?
New media is often associated with young people- they have grown up with it
What does ofcom say about the generation divide?
12-15 yr olds are more likely to be engaged in cross media tasking eg. Listening to music and texting
What do recent surveys suggest about the generation divide?
It may be in decline as older age groups increasingly engage in online activities
Eg. Due to the pandemic
Why are there adult anxieties about young people using new media?
Hard for parents and guardians to monitor what they are doing
Hacking is becoming more common
And they can talk to anyone even if they don’t know them which is unsafe
Why are the poor excluded from new media usage?
They are apart of the digital underclass- they cannot afford to keep up with the middle class use of new media technology
Ofcom say the class divide is decreasing but why?
Due to school initiative- chrome books, funding
What does helpser (2011) say about the class divide?
Despite the narrowing of the class divide a digital underclass which is characterised by unemployment, lower education levels and low digital skills does still exist - didn’t grow up with it so less likely to have ‘training’
What did li and Kirkup (2007) find about the gender divide?
There are significant differences between men and women in the U.K. with use of media tech
Men- likely to use chat room, emails and games
