what was 19th century liberalism

Q

why would gladstonian liberalism not work in the 20th century

A

as more poor people get the right to vote, as the labour party get more support, there is no reason for the artisans and upper middle class to not vote for labour- as it is clear that with the liberals not getting the majority of support their vote woud be wasted otherwise. the vote may as well go to a party which will win which has similar interests to the liberals.

Q

explain new liberalism

A
  • needed to change their views as otherwise too many would vote for labour
  • argued many people were trapped in poverty and could not self-help out of circumstance
  • therefore the redistribution of wealth would help the economy by taking wasted money from the very rich and giving to those who would drive up demand for local goods
  • conveniently allows for a retention of old notions of poverty and human nature and also inherently limits the amount of state aid by only giving minimal amount
