Very popular with 15 Million bringing in £500 Million annually
Problems with tourism?
Delicate plants trampled, Animals run over by fast driving, Access controlled during timber extraction, 50% privately owned with 40% of that not managed therefore overgrown and unattractive
Timber production?
50,000 tonnes produced every year, conifers are replaced by native deciduous trees when cut down
Pesticide use?
Herbicides and pesticides used sparingly to avoid damage to ecosystem
Work periods?
Reduced between April and Autumn so nesting birds are not disturbed
Courses?
Private landowners are given courses in sustainable woodland management
Visitor control?
Car parks provided so people don’t park on verges, cycle paths and routes set up, barriers stop access to vulnerable areas
Sustainable transport?
Hotels and campsites encouraged to join in with open top bus tour “New Forest tour” as well as electric vehicle and bike hire with several charging points provided.
Visitor Leaflet?
“5 ways to love the forest” encourages visitors to drive slowly or leave their cars behind
Green leaf businesses?
Local businesses sign up to a scheme to use local products, encourage walking/cycling and set aside 10% of their grounds for wildlife and support sustainably
