Abject Poverty
extreme poverty in which an individual lives on less than $1 per day.
Aboriginal collective thought
the way of thinking that the group is more important than the individual.
Aboriginal Healing Foundation
a foundation created as a result of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal peoples, create healing processes for the abuse suffered in the residential school system.
Aboriginal rights
Rights for first nations peoples, including their land and treaty rights. Also rights pertaining to their history, culture and language.
Aboriginal Self-government
First nations who make their own decisions involving their economy, education and use of natural resources.
Adam Smith
Scottish political economist, who described how a free-market economy would work, as well with laissez-faire capitalism.
adherence to collective norms
faithful observance of the norms or standards imposed on members of a group. Can relate to conduct, value and appearance.
altruism
unselfishness and focus on the needs of others.
Anti-terrorism Act
act created in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001 on the twin towers. Gives powers such as surveillance and detention for those suspected of carrying out terrorist attacks.
anti-war movement
an orgainzed campaign against war. The Vietnam anti-war movement gained public support during the late 1960s and contributed tot he united states ending that war.
assimilation
where an ethnic group adopts the culture of a dominant group and are absorbed into their society,
authoritarian political systems
political system in which all decisions related to governing the state are made by a small group of people or by one person
beliefs
the ideas and understandings that one persons holds to be true
Bolsheviks
members of the russian social-democratic workers party, led by Vladimir Lenin, which took control in 1917 and later became the communist party of the Soviet Union
bourgeoisie
a french word that refers to the social class that evolved in Europe during the Middle Ages with the development of cities and the growth in trade.
brinkmanship
international behaviour or foreign policy that takes a country to the brink of war; pushing one’s demands to the point of threatening military action.
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
a document entrenched in the Constitutional Act, 1982 that lists and describes the fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed to Canadians.
capitalism
economic system based on free markets, fair competition, and wise consumers where government involovement is favoured.
