an hour or two after expelling of the uterus and once the tone is reestablished
feeding needs to be initiated during this period
golden hour stages:
birth cry relaxation awakening activity crawling resting familiarisation suckling sleeping
birth cry:
first stage of newborn routine after birth
usually lasts under 2 minutes
relaxation:
second stage of newborn routine after birth
baby recovers
lasts around 1-3 minutes
awakening:
third stage of newborn routine after birth
baby should open eyes and start to respond to mothers voice
lasts around 3-8 minutes
activity:
fourth stage of newborn routine after birth
baby begins to move, little movements initially
lasts around 8-35 minutes
resting:
sixth stage of newborn routine after birth
can last any length of time
usually sleep on breast
familiarisation:
seventh stage of newborn routine after birth
baby starts to get familiar with breast, nuzzling, smelling, licking etc
crawling:
fifth stage of newborn routine after birth
baby moves towards to breast
may last around 35-45 minutes
suckling:
eighth stage of newborn routine after birth
baby should begin to feed (may need help in attaching)
can last any length of time
sleeping:
ninth stage of newborn routine after birth
baby sleeps after first breastfeed
ideally skin to skin should continue
can last for hours
