  1. Psychoanalytic - infant emotional tie with mother provides the foundation for all social relationship. problem - feed
  2. Learning theory - reinforces behaviour - problem - feed
  3. Ethological - breastfeeding is important but not the sole basis of attachment. Harlow experiment supports this
