Neutron Capture Flashcards
What does a type 2 supernova leave behind?
A neutron star or black hole
What are the two things that indicate a supernova is type 2
Strong H{alpha} emission lines (singularly ionised hydrogen) and a large flux of neutrinos.
What has to happen to cause a type 1a supernova?
A binary star system consisting of a white dwarf and red giant merging. This causes the core to exceed 1.4 M (chandrasekhar limit)
What conditions are needed for production of a type 2 supernova?
The star needs to be a red supergiant with a core mass over 10 M
Why are supernova used as “Standard candles”?
There is little variation in its absolute magnitude equal to roughly -19
What is indicative of a type 1a supernova?
Strong Si II lines due to a rapid onset of C and O fusion.
