Neutralisation Flashcards
What is another word for alkalis?
Soluble bases
Eg. Sodium hydroxide
What three metals do acid react with?
Metal oxides
Metal hydroxides
Metal carbonates
What is the scientific word for when it gives out heat to their surroundings?
Exothermic
What is it called when an acid reacts with an alkali?
Neutralisation
When an acid and and alkali are reacted with each other, what does it produce?
Metal salt+water
What forms when acids and metal carbonates are reacted with each other?
Metal salt+water+carbon dioxide
What is the test for carbon dioxide gas?
Pass the carbon dioxide through lime water. If the gas is carbon dioxide, the limewater will appear ‘cloudy’ or ‘milky’.
What is the test for carbonate?
Add the carbonate to an acid. If the substance effervesces, producing carbon dioxide gas, then it is carbonate.
What are crystals?
Large scale regular arrays of a particular solid compound
How do crystals form?
The solution of the compound cools and the solvent (usually water) evaporates
