Neurovascular Injuries Flashcards
In neuropraxia:
Is the axon intact?
What is damaged in the nerve?
What is the prognosis?
The axon is intact Results from blunt injury Damage of myelin---> conduction block Focal slowing Prognosis- good - few days--> weeks
Axonotomesis Axon damage? What structures of the neuron are involved? Wallerian Degeneration? MOI? Prognosis
Axon damage- yes axon damage yes myelin sheath damage No response prox or distal to lesion Get Emg 2-3 weeks post injury Axonial regeneraiton and can see improvement at one year.
Which type of nerve damage is recovery not possible without surgery?
Neurotmesis - complete disruption of all nerve anatomy
What nerves does do thoracic outlet syndrome often affect?
lower trunk (C8-T1)
What is parsonage-Turner Syndrome
neuritis that is idiopathic, recent viral illiness or post surgery
PURE MOTOR
What is the presentation of Parsonage Turner syndrome
Severe pain for 10 days progressing to weakness once pain subsides.
If you suspect Parsonage Turner what is the workup?
EMG
Treatment for Parsonage Turner
Narcotics/NSAIDS for pain. Reassurance. Spontanously resolves.
What is the most common nerve injury and what is the injury that causes it.
Axillary nerver Post cord C5-C6 (deltoid/teres minor)
GH
What are 2 injuries that can cause axillary nerve injury
GHJ dislocation( ant) Humeral neck fracture
Name the borders of Quad space
Teres min, teres maj, LHT, subscap, humerus
Presentation of quad space
numbness at lat shoulder
weakness - deltoid/teres minor
When do you consider surgery for quad space?
no recovrery aftr 3-6 months
What are the nerve roots and nerve that casue long thoracic nerve injury?
C5, C6, C7 - serratous anterior
Long Thoracic Nerve causes (lat/med) scapular winging
Med
