Neurotransmitters & Drug Classification Side Effects Flashcards
In the central nervous system and plays role in memory, learning, behavioral arousal, attention, mood, and rapid eye movement.
Acetylcholine
In peripheral nervous system. Regulates fight-or-flight response
Epinephrine / Adrenaline
In central nervous system, an excitatory neurotransmitter. Two major functions are wakefulness and alertness
Norepinephrine
Behavioral regulation, movement, learning, mood, and attention
Dopamine
In central nervous system, maintains HOMEOSTASIS. Also, mood regulation, control of appetite, sleep and arousal, and pain regulation.
Serotonin
Inhibitory amino acid; makes the brain more stable by decreasing neural transmission that prevents overexcitation
GABA
Inhibitory amino acid. Hyperpolarizes cells.
Glycine
Excitatory amino acid lowers the threshold for neural excitation.
Glutamate
Common side effects of antianxiety medications
poor coordination, dizziness, sedation, weakness
Common side effects of antidepressant medications
nausea, diarrhea, sedation, weight gain, dry mouth
Common side effects of antipsychotic medications
weight gain, sedation, dizziness, constipation
Common side effects of mood stabilizers
dizziness, somnolence, nausea, vomiting
Common side effects of psychostimulants
insomnia, weight loss, anorexia, irritability
Common side effects of sedative / sedative-hypnotic medications
daytime drowsiness, dizziness, sedation, falling, lethargy
TCAs (Tricyclic Antidepressants)
Tofranil, Anafranil, Sinequan
