Neurotransmitters Flashcards
What is a neuron?
Electrically excitable cells that form the basis of the nervous system.
Where do neurotransmitters go?
Neurotransmitters go from the presynaptic vessel to the postsynaptic receptor site.
How wide is the synapse?
20 nanometres wide.
What does Serotonin do?
Controls mood, sleep and appetite. If levels are too low it can cause depression. Antidepressants treat this by increasing the availability for serotonin at the postsynaptic receptor sites.
What does dopamine do?
Controls attention span, learning and pleasure. If levels are too high, it can cause schizophrenia. Anti-psychotics treat this by blocking dopamine activity by blocking the dopamine receptor sites.
