neurotransmitters Flashcards
1
Q
neurotransmitter
A
- synthesised in presynaptic neuron
- is present in presynaptic terminal and when released act on presynaptic target or organ
- if exogenously dilevered, it will make the same effect if done endogenously
- some mechanism to remove it from synaptic cleft
normally 1:1 communication ( 1 neurotransmitter afffect 1 neuron)
neuromodulatots affect groups of neurons
2
Q
synaptic transmission
A
- synthesis and stirage of neurotransmitter in presynaptic neuron
- release of neurotransmitter by presynaptic neuron into synaptic cleft
- intereact with neurotransmitter targets (receptors/ion channel/transporters)
- removal of neurotransmitter ie reuptake
can happen on presynaptic membrane autoreception. bind back to self - normally inhibit as negative feedback loop
3
Q
subtype of neurotransmitter
A
small molecule: short amino acid (8-9). low molecular weight, small vesicles approx. 40nm in diameter (5-10 copies of neurotransmitter)
neuroactive peptides: long chains (80-90), low molecular weight, large vesicles approx. 70-250nm in diameter
4
Q
small molecule transmitter
A
several classes
many act as neuromodulators
