Neurotransmitters Flashcards
What are the 3 classes of neurotransmitters?
small molecule transmitters, peptide transmitters, and transmitter gasses.
Which produce faster post synaptic responses, Neuropeptides or small molecule transmitter?
Small molecule transmitters
What enzyme in the synaptic cleft breaks down ACh rapidly and what part of it is reuse to make more Acetylcholine?
Acetylcholinesterase, and choline.
What happens when ACh binds to acetycholine receptors?
Sodium enter, then calcium is release and produce muscle contraction.
What are some effect of ACh in the brain?
Its active in maintaining waking electroencephalographic pattern of the cortex, thought to play a role in memory by maintaining neuron excitability. Decrease of ACh are thought to be related to alzheimer’s disease.
What is rate-limiting factor?
Any enzymes that is in limited supply, thus restricting the paced at which a chemical can be synthesized.
Give me the steps that happens in dopaminergic synapse?
Once dopamine is released. Reuptake by dopamine transporter (DAT). Bind to auto-receptors. monoamine oxidase (MAO) and catechol O-methyltransferase (COMT).Bind to metabotropic receptors (D1-5).
Give me two pathways of dopaminergic system?
Nigrostriatial and mesolimbic pathways.
