Neuroscience + Behaviour Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the Cortical Area as apart of the Sensory Motor System.
A
- Specific region in the cerebral cortex (outermost layer)
1. Primary Motor Cortex
2. Premotor Cortex
3. Supplementary Motor Area
4. S-1 and S-2
5. PPC
2
Q
Describe the functions of the Primary Motor Cortex 1 (M1) as a part of the sensory motor system.
A
- Crucial for voluntary movement execution (especially dexterous and skillfull)
- Direct Pathway to lower motor neurons in spinal chord -> allows rapid/efficient movement
- Also crucial for cognitive functions (motor learning)
- Aquiring motor movement requires dopamine-dependent and independent plasticity mechanisms within
- Can show plasticity
3
Q
Describe the roles of the Premotor cortex.
A
- Involved in planning/organizing movements/actions -> selects and prepare motor plan for complex movements
- Part of region of brain that coordinates complex movement sequences
- Precedes activation of primary motor cortex
4
Q
Describe the roles of the supplementary motor area.
A
- programming complex sequence of movements
- coordinates bi-lateral movement
5
Q
Describe the roles of S-1 and S-2 ?
A
- Involved in perception of somatosensory input from cutaneous + deep receptor organs of entire body
6
Q
Describe the roles of PPC?
A
- Integrates sensory information for motor planning and execution
7
Q
What are the sub-cortical areas involved in the sensory motor system?
A
- Region of the brain below to cerebral cortex
-Cerebellum - Basal Ganglia
8
Q
What is the Cerebellum’s role in the sensory motor system?
A
- Helps coordinates movement and balance
- Aka “little brain”
-Plays vital role in language + attention - Assists w/ vision + eye movement
9
Q
What is the Basal Ganglia’s role in the sensory motor system?
A
- Controls body’s involuntary movements
- Filters out unnecessary or incorrect signals
10
Q
What is motor prediction?
A
The Central Nervous System’s ability to predict consequences of actions
-critical for tje control of voluntary action
- role of cerebellum
