Neuropsychology Flashcards
what are the three main functions of the nervous system?
To detect changes inside and outside of the body, to process the information, to coordinate suitable responses to the information
Describe the relationship between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system.
The CNS controls the upper half of the body, as the PNS controls the lower half of the body.
What is the main role of the central nervous system?
The CNS main role is to process information provided by the sensory systems decide what to do with the formation and send it back to the sensory system.
What are the two sub-systems of the peripheral nervous system?
Autonomic and somatic
What is the difference between the somatic and autonomic nervous systems?
Somatic is something we choose to do e.g kick a football.
Autonomic is som thing that happens (heartbeat, bwithout us choosing to do it e.g linking, breathing, etc).
The autonomic nervous system can be split into two further sub-systems. What are they and what is the difference between them?
sympathetic division and the parasympathetic division
- the sympathetic get your body into shock mode, like your heartbeat, airways bladder and more.
The parasympathetic system controls the body for a state of calm, such as your heartbeat, bladder, stomach, and more.
What is a neuron?
A neuron is a individual nerve cell that transmits information around the body.
What is the role of the soma?
It protects the nucleus collects information and sends it.
What is the role of a dendrite?
They receive messages and transmit the message to the soma
What is the axon?
The axon is the tail of the neuron, it sends the information provided.
What do the axon terminals do?
It stores information that helps pass on the formation provided.
What is a myelin sheath and what is its purpose?
The myelin sheath is a white, fatty covering that helps protect the axon.
What is a neurotransmitter?
A neurotransmitter is a chemical that continues the transition of a signal across the synaptic gap between neurons.
Describe the process of information being transmitted from one neuron to another. Ensure that you include: soma, nucleus, dendrite, axon, axon terminal, synapse, neurotransmitter
The dendrites reach out receive the information, and send it to the nucleus, which goes through the soma then the axon sends the message to the axon terminals then the synaptic buttons relay the information.
What are the 3 major regions in the brain?
forebrain, midbrain, and hindbrain
What are the two functions of both the left and right hemispheres?
Left - Logic and Facts
Right - Creativity and imagination
