neuropraxia Flashcards
1
Q
- Initial Injury: Temporary Block of Nerve Conduction
A
Cause -compression, ischemia, or localised trauma
Pathology - no damage to axons or myelin
2
Q
- Functional impairment
A
Nerve signals fail to go past site of injury
Symptoms - weakness, numbness, sensory changes in area
3
Q
- Recovery phase
A
As the site of compression or ischemia resolve, normal nerve conduction are restored
4
Q
What is it?
A
Neuropraxia is the mildest form of nerve injury, characterized by temporary disruption of nerve function without structural damage to the nerve fibers (axons) or their surrounding structures (myelin sheath). It is often caused by compression, stretching, or a sudden blunt injury that temporarily impairs conduction along the affected nerve.
