Neurophysiology Introduction Flashcards
Role of the Nervous System
Nervous system is a system of communication that controls the function of different organs
What is the nervous system made up of
It is made up of :
1) Central Nervous System
2) Peripheral Nervous System
Define CNS
Central Nervous System is made up of brain in the skull and spinal cord in the vertebral column.
Brain is made up of cerebrum, cerebellum and medulla oblongata
Define PNS
Peripheral nervous system is made up of somatic nervous system that deals with the
changes in the external environment and autonomic nervous system that deals with
changes within the internal body organs
What is a neuron?
Neuron is made up of central part called cell body where the nucleus is located and
cytoplasmic prolongations. These prolongations are of two types: short and ramified
dendrites and long and unique axon
The nerve that forms the peripheral nervous system is made up of bundle of fibers that are
myelinated or non-myelinated . they are also of different diameter
