Neurophysiology - Intro Flashcards
A nervous system affords the organism the ability ….
to perceive, move within, and interact with its environment
A nervous system (NS) permits an organism….
to better meets its
homeostatic needs thus increasing its chances of survival
Describe Efferents
Exiting - Nerve connections that conduct away from the brain
Describe afferents
Arriving - Nerve connections that conduct towards the brain
Describe the basic subdivision of the nervous system (3 parts)
Central Nervous System (CNS)
Peripheral Nervous System(PNS)
Enteric nervous system (ENS)
What is the CNS made up of ?
Brain and spinal chord
What is the PNS made up of ?
Composed of cranial and spinal nerves
- can be further subdivided into as somatic (skeletal muscle, skin, retina) and
visceral/autonomic (abdomen and thoracic organs smooth muscle, exocrine glands)
What is the Enteric nervous system (ENS)?
The nerve network in the wall of the digestive tract. Sometimes referred to as the third component of the nervous system.
