What is Guillan-Barre syndrome?
It is a post viral syndrome which is likely to involve an auto immune response.
In this condition 2 weeks post viral infection people develop a progressive neuropathy starting at the distal limbs and extending proximally.
Treatment is purely supportive.
Full recovery is achieved in 95% of people however this can take up to 2 years.
What is Charcot Marie Tooth?
It is an autosomal dominant condition although some have de novo mutations.
It is characterised by distal muscle weakness and sensory loss which extends proximally over time.
Symptoms usually present from 10 years old. Treatment is purely supportive.
Life expectancy is near normal.
What is CIDP (Chronic inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy)?
It is a immune mediated neuropathy of the PNS.
Thought to be linked to Gullian-Barre.
Causes both proximal and distal muscle weakness as well as reduced reflexes and abnormal gait.
Symptoms are relapsing.
Aetiology is usually idiopathic but sometimes related to MS
