Q

Describe the process of synaptic transmission

A
  • Electrical impulses travel along presynaptic neurone
  • electrical impulse reaches synaptic vesicle to release neurotransmitter
-these diffuse across synapse and attach to receptors on post synaptic neurone
-Trigger achon potential - carried to dendrite of nerve cell

Q

How Recreational drugs change neurotransmitters in the brain

A

-Increase/decrease neurotransmitters at the synapse
-Change chemical balance
- affect how neurotransmitters reupraken or released at the synapse eg cocaine simulates or other dopamine and blocks reuptake so gives sense of euphoria

Q

Cocaine

A

Blocked receptors
Blocked reuptake of dopamine

I SO body stops making as much dopamine
Receptors degrade as too much dopamine coming through

A

Triggers release of dopamine
- mimics neurotransmitter so can trigger receptor

Q

Alcohol

A

, Increases GABA
inhibits neurotransmission of different neurotransmitters, in different areas of the brain
Inhibits the dopamine inhibitor so therefore dopamine increase
The same for serotonin
