Neurons, Synaptic transmission and Action Potentials Flashcards
What does a dendrite do?
Pick up signals from sense organs.
What does the axon do?
Carried the electrical nerve impulse down the length of the cell.
What does the myelin sheath do?
Insulates the cell.
What is the process of synaptic transmission?
1 - Axon potential goes down axon to the terminal
2 - Vesicles release NT into the gap
3 - NT drift across the gap and bond to receptors
4 - When enough are filled, the nerve impulse starts on the next cell
What happens to the excess NT?
Reabsorbed by the cell
What threshold does the neurone have to reach?
From -70 mv to -55 mv
What is depolarization?
The ion becoming more positive
What is repolarisation?
The ion becoming more negative
What is the refractory period?
When it goes extra negative (hyperpolarisation) before going back to the resting state
