Neurons and Glia Flashcards
What components make up a neuron?
Dendrites - receive information.
Cell body - has a nucleus.
Axon hillock - triggers an action potential.
Axon - sends action potential.
Axon terminals - releases NTs.
What types of neurons are there?
Sensory and motor - peripheral.
Intermediate - central.
What are astrocytes?
CNS - glial cell.
Maintains external environment of neurons.
Surrounds blood vessels, forms blood brain barrier.
What are ependymal cells?
CNS - glial cell.
Produces CSF.
What are microglia?
CNS - glial cell.
Macrophages.
What are oligodendrocytes?
CNS - glial cell.
Forms myelin sheath.
What are Schwann cells?
PNS - glial.
Forms a myelin sheath.
What are satellite cells?
PNS - glial.
Supports neuron cell bodies.
