What are some important neurotransmitters?
glutamate, dopamine, serotonin, acetylcholine and endorphins
What is neurotransmisson?
The process through which information is transmitted from one neuron to another by neurotransmitters
What are the two divisions in the nervous system?
central and peripheral
What does the central nervous system include?
Brain and spinal cord
What does the peripheral nervous system do?
Conveys messages between the central nervous system and the rest of the body
The peripheral nervous system is made up of what?
The somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system
The somatic nervous system does what?
transmits sensory information from the eyes. ears and skin and motor commands
The autonomic nervous system does what?
transmits information to and from bodily structures that carry out basic life processes like breathing and digestion
What are the two functional systems of the autonomic nervous system?
the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems
