Neurons Flashcards
How do neurones work?
1) Electrical impulse is sent from a nerve receptor and travels along the axon
2) At nerve ending there is a gap called the synapse. It works as the electrical impulse and triggers the release of neurotransmitters.
What’s a reflex arc?
Nerve pathway which makes a fast automatic response possible
What are the 3 types of neurones?
Sensory
Relay
Motor
What are reflex actions?
Rapid automatic responses which don’t involve the brain. Important because it helps you avoid danger and helps with coordinating daily functions
What’s a stimulus?
Change in an organisms surroundings
What are receptors?
Something which detects changes. Converts stimulus energy into electrical impulses.
What’s an effector?
Muscle or gland that brings a response to the stimulus
What’s sensitivity?
Being able to detect or sense changes in the environment and to be able to make responses
What’s ADH?
Too little water in the blood
What’s homeostasis?
Maintaining a constant internal environment. Need to be kept steady so cells can function properly
What’s negative feedback?
Type of control which homeostasis involves
What is thermoregulation?
Control of body temperature to ensure optimum temperature for enzymes
What are electrical impulses passed through?
Electrical impulses are passed through the nervous system and back to the effector
