Neurons Flashcards
1
Q
What defines the CNS?
A
Neurons in the brain and the spinal cord
2
Q
What are neurons and their function?
A
Neurons are specialised cells which gather signals; process them; depending on processing, send signals to other neurons
3
Q
Name parts of a neuron
A
Dendrites Cell body Nucleus Axon Nodes of Ranvier Myelin (sheath) Pre synaptic terminal
4
Q
Define what is meant by a myelin sheath
A
Fatty layer of insulation around the axon which speeds conduction.
Fact: loss of myelination causes disease states such as multiple sclerosis
5
Q
What is the simple process of neuron firing
A
- Gathers signals from dendrites
- Sums electrical signals
- If it reaches threshold, cell fires and sends AP down axon causing pre synaptic terminals to release neurotransmitters into the synapse
- Neurotransmitters cause next dendrite to be exited or inhibited
6
Q
What determines neuron function?
A
- Shape (e.g. Dendrite density)
- Size: axon length, width and myelin
- Spacial arrangements: sensory; axon towards brain (afferent). Motor; dendrite from brain (efferent). Interneurons; neuron to neuron connection
