Neurons Flashcards
Sensory neurons
Transmit information from sensory cells in the body (receptors) to the brain;
Also called afferent nuerons
Interneurons
Neurons that connect other neurons to each other, found only in the brain and spinal cord
Motor neurons (efferent)
Neurons that transmits commands FROM the brain to the glands or musculature of the body, typically through the spinal cord. Motor neurons carry out both voluntary actions and bodily functions
Dendrites
Branch like extentions of the neurons that recieve information from other cells
Cell body
The part of the neuron containing chromosomes and microstructures vital to the cell functioning
The part of the neuron that includes a nucleus containing genetic material (chromosomes) as well as other microstructures vital to the cell functioning
Axon
The long extension of the cell body of a neuron that electrical impulses pass ( can be upto a meter long)
Myelin shealth
A tight coat of cells composed of liquids to insulate the axon from chemical or physical stimuli
That mah interfere with transmissions or nerve impulse & speeds neutral admissions
Synapse
The place at which transmission of information between neurons occur
( two cells do not touch at synapse; instead a space exists between the two neurons called synapse cleft)
