Neurons Flashcards
Astrocytes: where and what do they do?
Between neurons and blood cells. Maintains blood brain barrier, creates a 3D frame for CNS, repairs damaged neural tissue, guides neuron development
Oligodendrocytes: where and what do they do?
Brain & spinal cord. Forms the myelin
Microglia: where and what do they do?
CNS. Removes cell waste
Ependyma: where and what do they do?
Ventricles of the brain and central canal of the spinal cord. Assists in circulation and monitoring of cerebrospinal fluid
Bipolar neuron
Neuron with two nerve fibers. One acts as the dendrite, the other as an axon.
—————0——————}{}{
Unipolar
Single nerve fiber extending from cell body. Acts as both the axon and dendrite.
0 *———————!———————}{}{
Multipolar
Many nerve fibers coming from the cell body. Only one acts as an axon and the dendrite is attached to the cell body.
