Neurons Flashcards
How many neurons are in the brain?
86 billion on average
What are the 3 types of Neurons? (define each)
Sensory Neurons, Motor Neurons, Interneurons
How does the perceived intensity vary by the all-or-nothing firing of neurons?
1) More neurons fired or 2) the frequency of neurons fired
Draw or imagine a typical neuron
yea…
Dendrite
Receives input signals from other neurons
Nucleus
Collects information from dendrites to send to the axon
Axon
Transmits neural impulses to the Axon Terminal
When does the nueron fire?
When the cell reaches a certain threshold to fire an all-or-nothing action potential
Myelin Sheath
A protective insulation layer allowing for quick transmission
Axon Terminal
Where the nueron releases neurotransmitter and communicates with other neurons
Synapse
The gap where neurons communicate with other neurons
Psychopharmacological drugs have 2 categories (define each)
Antagonists and Agonists
How is the brain unlike a computer/laptop? (2 things)
1) Resilient - damage to 1 part doesn’t make the entire brain collapse.
2) Fast - although brain tissues are slow, processing speed is very fast
