Neurons Flashcards
Sensory neuron
Afferent neurons via afferent pathways. Afferent tracts in the spinal cord to the brain
Interneuron
An interneuron is a neuron that can communicate between sensory and motor neurons.
They are only found in the CNS
Motor neuron
Efferent tracts in the spinal cord then efferent pathways. carry signals from CNS to other parts of the body
Neuron
receives, processes and responds to information
Axon
the pathway down which the neural message travels. the axon transmits neural information to other neurons
Dendrite
detects and receives incoming neural messages
Soma
the cell body of the neuron. contains the nucleus
Myelin Sheath
Fatty tissue that encases the axon to aid in speed of transmission. protects the axon
Axon terminal
Exit pathways for a neural messages to make their way to the next neuron
terminal button
A small structure that stores and secretes a neurotransmitter that is manufactured by the neuron and carries its chemical message to other neurons or cells.
Neurotransmitter
A neurotransmitter is a chemical substance produced by a neuron that carries a message to other neurons or cells in muscles, organs or other tissue.
When carrying a message to another neuron, neurotransmitters works by attaching itself to receptor sites of postsynaptic neurons that are specialised to receive that specific neurotransmitter.
Synapse
the synapse is the site where communication occurs between the neurons
