Neurones Flashcards
What are the main cells of the nervous system?
Glia and Neurons
How do neurons communicate within a cell?
Through electrical signals called action potentials
How do neurons communicate between cells?
Through chemical messengers called neurotransmitters
What is the direction of action potential movement in a neuron?
From the cell body, along the axon, to the synapse
What is a synapse?
The junction between two neurons where neurotransmitters are released to transmit signals
How do neurotransmitters affect the next neuron?
They can either excite or inhibit the neuron depending on the receptor combination
What is the difference between neurotransmitters and hormones?
Neurotransmitters act locally between neurons, while hormones travel through the bloodstream and have global effects
Name four classes of neurotransmitters.
Amino acids, Monoamines, Soluble gases, and Neuropeptides
