Neurones Flashcards
neurone
cells that transmit information from receptors to effectors
sensory neurone
carry impulses from receptors to effectors
motor neurone
carry impulses from the CNS to effector organs
relay neurone
receive impulses from a sensory neurone and relay them to motor neurones
dendrites
carry nervous impulses towards a cell body
axons
carry nervous impulses away from the cell body
Schwann cells
responsible for forming the the myelin sheath around the neurone.
Schwann cells location
wrapped around the axon of the neurone
nodes of ranvier
gaps between adjacent Schwann cells
myelin sheath
insulate neurones which increases the speed of impulse transmission
difference between myelinated and non-myelinated neurones.
- does not contain a myelin sheath
- conduct impulses slower
- found in the autonomic nervous system (supplies internal organs like stomach )
