Neuron Flashcards
1
Q
Dendrite
A
- Recieve information from other neurons
2
Q
Axon
A
- Transmits signals to other neurons
3
Q
Myelin Sheath
A
- Fatty material- acts as insulation
4
Q
Nodes of Ranvier
A
- Gaps in myelin- allows saltatory conduction (leaping- electrical) and helps the signal travel faster (signal hops from node to node)
5
Q
Synpase
A
- Come in contact with next dendrite -> neurotransmitters pass information from one neuron to the next
6
Q
Membrane potential
A
- Difference in voltage or electrical charge between the inside and outside of membrane
7
Q
Sodium Potassium Pump
A
- Where the build up of voltage handled-> creates voltage differential by moving positively- charged sodium ions out for every 2 potassium ions in –> net negative charge inside
- Inside is positive and outside is negative -> sodium channels close and potassium channels open-> Want negative inside and positive outside
- Pumps burn up ATP to pump out sodium back out and potassium back in
8
Q
Resting potential
A
- When neuron is inactive- 70 milli volts
9
Q
10n channels
A
- Proteins straddle membranes –> do not need ATP
10
Q
Action potential
A
- Where electrical potential of cell rises and falls
- Input/stimulus- creates a change in the neuron which reaches the axon
- Signal changing voltage travels down neuron’s membrane like a wave
11
Q
Saltatory conduction
A
- Sppeds up travel time of action potential down the neurons
- Myelin insulates the signal so it is not a steady wave
12
Q
Exocytosis
A
- Wave reaches end of neuron triggers release of neurotransmitters-> neurotransmitters flow from synapse to next neuron
13
Q
Sensory neuron
A
- Carry information to the brain and the spinal cord for analysis
14
Q
Association neuron
A
- Found in central nervous system. In the spinal cord is for inhibitory control. Interconnect other cells with one another.
15
Q
Motor neuron
A
- Carry information from the brain and spinal cord to muscles to allow movement
- Go to other organs –> helps make them work
- Carry information to special parts of the brain to other parts of the brain and spinal cord
