Neurology Physiology Flashcards
What is cerebral perfusion pressure?
net pressure gradient causing blood flow to the brain
How is CPP calculated?
CPP= Mean arterial pressure - Intra cranial pressure
What is non-REM stage 1 ?
Light sleep
Transition to this stage be associated with hypnic jerks
What are the changes on the non-REM stage 1?
Theta waves
What is non-REM stage 2 ?
Deeper sleep
Represents around 50% of total sleep
What are the changes on the non-REM stage 2?
Sleep spindles + K-complexes
What is non-REM stage 3 ?
Deep sleep
Parasomnias such as night terrors, nocturnal enuresis, sleepwalking
What is non-REM stage 3 ?
Delta waves
What occurs in REM sleep?
Dreaming occurs
Loss of muscle tone, erections
What is the sequence of sleep?
N1 → N2 → N3 → REM
Theta → Sleep spindles/K-complexes → Delta → Beta
The Sleep Doctor’s Brain
What receptor is blocked in myasthenia?
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
These are required for skeletal muscle activation
