Neurology of Swallow Flashcards
Which hemisphere is responsible for swallowing?
Both ! but most people have a dominant hemisphere, damage to either hemisphere may affect swallow safety
Which part of the cerebellum is responsible for the oral phase?
The Primary Motor cortex
Is the the oral stage under voluntary or involuntary control?
Majority voluntary
Is the pharyngeal stage under voluntary or involuntary control?
Involuntary
How does signals from the primary motor cortex result in volitional movement?
Primary motor cortex -> UMNs (corticobulbar motor pathway) -> brainstem where synpases with LMNs
What is the primary motor cortex responsible for?
Volitional movements of the tongue, jaw, cheeks and lips
Which area of the brain is responsible for the pharyngeal stage?
Medulla in brainstem
What is sensory input used for?
Motor planning
Where are motor plans for the pharyngeal stage made
The central Pattern Generator (CPG) in the Medulla
How are motor pplans carried from the CPG to muscles
via motor nerves (UMNs-> LMNs incl. cranial nerves)
What does the Dorsal Swallowing Group (DGS) do?
the nucleus tractus solidaritus (NTS) responsible for triggering swallow and timing
What does the Ventral Swallowing Group (VSG) do?
distributes motor plan for pharyngeal swallow via cranial nerves to instruct muscle contraction
