Neurology Flashcards
Describe
- the pathway along which an UPPER motor neuron could occur
- the classical signs
Upper motor neuron lesion are lesions anywhere from the cortex to the descending tracts. This lesion causes hyperreflexia, spasticity, and a positive Babinski reflex, presenting as an upward response of the big toe when the plantar surface of the foot is stroked, with other toes fanning out.
Describe
- the pathway along which an LOWER motor neuron could occur
- the classical signs
Lower motor neuron lesions are lesioAs anywhere from the anterior horn of the spinal cord, peripheral nerve, neuromuscular junction, or muscle. This type of lesion causes hyporeflexia, flaccid paralysis, and atrophy.[2]
What is the most common cause of facial nerve paralysis?
Bells palsy
If diagnosing a patient with bell’s palsy, what is the time frame steroids should be prescribed?
72 hours
What two syndromes is cannabidol approved for without a strong evidence base?
- Lennox Gestaut syndrome
- Dravet syndrome
What is the active component of cannabis and which one is used in Lennox Gestaut and Dravet syndrome?
- cannabidoil (other active component is delta 9-Tetrahydrocannabinol THC)
THC acid is the precursor to delta 9 THC
What are the two most likely arteries affected in the lateral medullary syndrome?
- posterior inferior cerebellar artery
- distal vertebral artery
