Phenytoin - indications + AE
Focal sezuires
Common: sedation, tremor, ataxia, dizziness, headache, bradycardia, hypotension, asystole, vertical nystagmus
Serious: SJS, gingival hyperplasia, peripheral neuropathy, pancytopenia, osteoporosis, hepatotoxicity
Valproate - indications + AE
Generalised seizures
Common: sedation, tremor, ataxia, dizziness, headache, weight gain, hair loss, PCOS, parkinsonians with dementia
Serious: pancytopenia, osteoporosis, hepatotoxicity, pancreatitis, hyperammonemia
Carbamazapine - indications + AE
Focal seizures
Common: Sedation, nausea, ataxia, tremor, diplopia, dizziness
Serious: Hyponatraemia, SJS, pancytopenia, osteoporosis, hepatotoxicity, agranulocytosis
Lamotrigine - indications + AE
Focal/generalised seizures, pregnancy (**not myoclonic), older patients
Common: Sedation, nausea, ataxia, tremor, diplopia, dizziness, insomnia
Serious: SJS
Gabapentin/pregabalin - indications + AE
Focal seizures
Common: Sedation, weight gain, oedema, dizziness
Topiramate - indications + AE
Broad spectrum
Common: Sedation, nausea, ataxia, tremor, diplopia, dizziness, poor concentration, paraesthesia, weight loss, anhidrosis, dizziness
Serious: Nephrolithiasis (calcium phosphate), glaucoma, psychosis
Levetiracetam - indications + AE
Broad spectrum - focal/generalised seizures, pregnancy, older patients
Common: Sedation, irritability, psychosis, depression
Serious: suicidal ideation and thrombocytopenia (rare)
Lacosamide - indications + AE
Focal serizures
Common: Sedation, nausea, ataxia, tremor, diplopia, dizziness, PR prolongation
Serious: AV block, AF
Ethosuximide - indications + AE
Absent seizures
Serious: SJS, agranulocytosis, sleep disturbance
Status epilepticus treatment
IV benzodiapine + IV AEDs (IV phosphenytoin - IV valproac acid in patients allergic to phenytoin) or IV levetiracetam)
