CS: star gazing, blindness, opisthotonos, recumbency, tremors
Tx: supplement thiamine q12h for 3 days
House quietly
Vision should return in 5-7 days
Prevention: thiamine rich diet
Listeriosis
Seen in 18-24mo sheep - changing molar teeth
Fed on mouldy silage
Micro abscesses in the brainstem
CS: facial nerve paralysis (ear droop, ptosis, deviated muzzle), trigeminal nerve paralysis (salivation and food impacted in cheek), anorexia, depression, unilateral hemiparesis
Tx: benzylpenicllin IV Followed by procaine penicillin IM Dexamethasone IV The 5 days of procaine penicillin IM Remove mouldy silage
Common neurological diseases seen in adult sheep
Metabolic - seen during pregnancy
- pregnancy toxaemia - blind, dull
- hypocalcaemia - collapsed, bloated, facial paralysis
- Hypomagnaesaemia - staggers and hyperaesthesia
Cervical subluxation - ram fighting - paresis GID cysts Listeriosis Brain abscess Wobbler scrapie
