- Trigeminal nerve - facial muscles
- Sensation
- Motor: clench jaw

- Abudences nerve - eye movement
- Eye movement

How do you assess CN III, IV and VI?
Extra - ocular movements
- Draw the letter H for them to follow
- Pen to nose
- Pupil reaction
- Nystagmus - uncontrolled eye lids
- Dropping eye lids
What is Cranial Nerve VII?
- Facial nerve
Is the face symmetrical?
Lift eyebrows
Close eye tightly - then lift eye lids whilst they keep them closed
Show upper and lower teeth
Puff out cheeks

What is Cranial Nerve VIII?
Vestibulochochlear nerve - hearing
Rub fingers and thumb next to each ear

Glossopharyngeal nerve - voice
Changes in voice?
Able to swallow?
Absent gag reflex?
Hoarseness?

Vagus nerve
Get patient to say ‘ahhh’
Uvula elevation and symmetry

What is Cranial Nerve XI?
Accessory Nerve - trapezium and the sternocleidomastoid muscles
Shoulders symmetrical - front and back?
Shrug test - with and without resistance
Turn face against resistance
Motor nerve
What is Cranial Nerve XII?
Hypoglossal nerve - tongue movement
Central?
Move side to side?
Cheek test

What do you test for to see if the Cerebellum is affected?
Balance - Rhombergs test
Finger to nose test
Assessing for dysdiadochokinesia (floppy hands)
Gait - pattern of walking
What is AVVV?
Ataxia - sudden onset change in coordination/movements
Visual - sudden onset visual disturbances
Vertigo
Vomiting
