Neurological Assessment Flashcards
Pain felt at points remote from the lesion site
Referral Pain
A form of referred pain; sharp, shooting pain felt in a dermatome, myotome, or sclerotome because of direct involvement of or damage to a spinal nerve or nerve root
Radicular or radiating pain
Radiating paresthesia, numbness or weakness but not pain; arises from nerve root(s)
Radiculopathy
Neurogenic disorder involving the spinal cord or brain, resulting in upper motor neuron lesion
- patterns of pain or symptoms different from that of radicular pain
- often both upper and lower limbs affected
Myelopathy
Peripheral nerve injury, disease or dysfunction
- mononeuropathy involves a single peripheral nerve
- polyneuropathy involves more than one peripheral nerve
Neuropathy
Compression or pathology at two or more points along a peripheral nerve or nerve root may lead to a cumulative effect that results in apparent signs and symptoms, while a problem at one point may not be sufficient to cause signs and symptoms
Double crush syndrome or double entrapment neuropathy
