Neurologic dysfunction (1) Flashcards
COMA
unconsciousness, unarousable, unresponsive
Akinetic Mutism
unresponsiveness to the environment, makes no movement or sound but sometimes opens eyes
persistant vegetative state
devoid of cognitive function but has sleep-wake cycles
The body temperature of an unconscious person is never taken by which route,
MOUTH
Temp would be taken via rectal or tympanic
Primary cerebrovascular disorder and 5th leading cause of death in US
STROKE
What is agnosia?
Failure to recognize familiar objects perceived by the senses
Stroke
non-modifiable risk factors
age, gender, ethnicity
Stoke
Modifiable risk factors
HYPERTENSION (primary)
SMOKING
Cardiovascular disease
elevated cholesterol/hematocrit
obesity
Diabetes
oral contraceptive use
Drug/Alcohol abuse
This type of stroke is a disruption of the blood supply caused by an obstruction, usually a thrombus or an embolism, that causes infarction of brain tissue
Ischemic stoke
This type of stroke is caused by bleeding into brain tissue, the ventricles or subarachnoid space
Hemorrhagic stroke
Types of Ischemic stroke
*Large Artery Thrombosis
*small penetrating artery thrombosis
*cardiogenic embolism
*cryptogenic (no known cause)
Other (causes- drug use, migraines, etc)
Hemiplegia
Paralysis of one side of the body, or part of it, due to an injury in the MOTOR part of the brain
Hemiparesis
Weakness of one side of the body, or part of it, due to an injury in the MOTOR part of the brain
Dysarthria
Defects to articulation, due to neurologic causes
Apashia
Inability to express oneself or to understand language
Expressive Aphasia
inability to express oneself, often associated with damage to the left FRONTAL lobe
Hemianopsia
Blindness of half of the field of vision in one or both eyes
TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack)
Completely resolves in less than 24 hours. Most resolve in less than 1 hour.
Occurs when there is a sudden loss of sensory, motor or visual function due to impairment of blood flow.
another name for Headache
Cephalalgia
Primary Headache
Has NO KNOWN organic cause
Secondary Headache
A symptom WITH an organic cause (like a brain tumor or an aneurysm)
